The Unicorn in the Garden Bill Hurtz, who had been directing industrial and commercial films for UPA (United Productions of America), scored a personal triumph in adapting James Thurber's The Unicorn in the Garden for the screen. In later years the animation of highly idividual artists' drawings became more familiar, but in 1953 the faithful reproduction of Thurber's characters and settings was particularly impressive. Hurtz deliberatley assigned the cleanup work to some of the poorest draftsmen in the studio to captured the lumpy look and the low-key charm of Thurber's fable..
